the receipt does not say there is a restocking fee for my item, can they charge me according to law|||By law, they don't even need to take the thing back, unless it is unsuitable in some way.|||Yes, they can.
In most cases the receipt does not say you can return the item and get your money back, yet you expect to be able to do that. If you go with "what is on the receipt" then you could not return it at all.
A restocking fee is becoming more common, specially with bigger items. They run the risk of you not returning all the parts, having damaged it somehow, etc. In almost all cases they end up having to sell the item at a reduced price because it is "used." By charging a 10-20% restocking fee they cut their loses on the returns.
With the economy being what it is, they do not want people returning stuff so the return issue is going to get more complicated. Also with the closure of The Good Guys, Circuit City, Comp USA and other big electronic stores, the few that remain will have less competition so will be able to dictate more to the customer.
Before you buy a big cost item in the future, make sure it is what you want, check the internet to see if you can get a better deal and always make sure you know the return policy before you buy the item.|||It sort of can depend on which state she lives in. Google it or something
