When should a high school student start requesting information from colleges?

There isn't a fee for information packets is there?|||No, but the idea of an "information packet" has really lost meaning now that pretty much everything is available on the schools' websites. If you do want to be in correspondence with them, you can ask for information at any time. I know that many schools now start communicating with students as high school sophomores, so that would be the time they start developing relationships with potential students.|||when you take the PSAT (usually sophomore year) you can check a box and request information. You will be absolutely FLOODED with free college pamphlets and information. They have been really helpful to me|||There isn't a fee, and usually you start looking around beginning of 11th grade. My son and I have been looking online at schools to develop a list of potentials that we may visit. A site you could try that helps you find schools that fit your criteria is: www.collegesearch.collegeboard.com.|||No, there is no fee for information. You should start doing that as a junior in high school and researching any scholarships and grants that are available, too. I found amazing grants by doing research at the library. Some of them were given just because you have a certain name or were a girl majoring in biology or whatever. It was unbelievable!! : )|||as soon as you are interested. and you could just look online you don't need information packets...|||Nope, there isn't. I didn't start visiting colleges and figuring out which to apply to until the second semester of my junior year of high school. At this point, you probably have taken (or are about to) take the SATs once and have a better perspective on your GPA, what you like to study, etc.|||To be honest, you should request information as early as your sophomore year.

You should do it this early because you'll be able to see what kind of school best fits you, and you'll also be able to see what requirements they have so that you can get on track to meet them.

There is no fee for requesting a packet. You just have to wait for it to get there.

Happy college searching!
