Council tax bill has been passed to debt company, both bills vary largely. So I asked the debt company for a breakdown of my account to which they refused unless I pay 拢25 upfront!|||ILLEGAL
data protection act states you have a right to your files
SECONDLY
Council has a limited amount of time to recoup council tax, you are well within your rights to DEMAND a breakdown
My advice, in future pay your bills, but, tell the collection agency you have sort advice, and will go to court as you disagree with the amount. If they wish to send you a breakdown for clarification this expensive step could be averted, as you will be asking for costs for your time in court. PUT THIS IN WRITING, as the A$$holes on the phone are A$$holes|||When you say 'Debt Company' I assume that you mean a Bailiff Company, as local councils are not permitted to send your debt out for collection unless they have already gained a summons and liability order for the debt. If it is a Bailiff Company then I would suggest that you contact the council directly and try to make an arrangement to pay directly with them. If they agree, then they will call teh debt back from the Bailiff and you will not have to pay the bailiffs fees. However, if they do not agree then the bailiffs will add fees and charges all over the place, these will grow to an unbelievable amount if you are not careful.
You are entitled to a breakdown of what you owe in council tax and magistrates court fees, which you can obtain by contacting your local council revenues section. This will not include any bailiff fees, so the difference between what the council say you owe and what the bailiffs say you owe is the sum of their current fees.
My advice is speak to the council and try your very best to make an arrangement with them, and stick to it, or you will soon see just how horrible they can make your life.|||Mark and Mummy both make good points, but please remember that council tax bills in the UK are subject to the Magistrates Court not the County Court, so different rules apply. Personally, I would find out what is owed in actual Council Tax not fees etc and pay that amount directly to the local authority. They never refuse money. Once the debt has been paid to the council tell the collectors to take a hike. They purchase these debts in bulk from the local authority and rely on threats to make you pay up. If you stand up to them they fold like a pack of cards|||The bills probably vary a lot because the collection agency have put their fees on. Try asking them how much their fees are and see if that and your bill add up, there could also be court fees added as well.|||debt company have added on charges for admin etc
